Understanding Ratios

Leader to participant ratios is an important legal consideration when planning your bush walk. Ratios are dependent on the age and number of participants in your group and the activities conducted on your bush walk.

Considerations

For students, ratios are different in each State and Territory. Ensure you are looking at the appropriate legal documents when planning, or contact the school you are working with.
If you have participants with disabilities the ratios may differ and you will need to contact the organisation you are working with to clarify this.

Checklist

  • Age of participants
  • Number of participants
  • Male to Female ratio
  • Length of walk – day or overnight
  • Activities – bushwalking, camping, kayaking, abseiling etc.
